Hamilton’s Traffic Department to Recommend Speed-Limit Change

In an effort to keep the streets of Hamilton safer, the Hamilton Traffic Department is recommending a default speed-limit change for across the city that would lower the speed to 40 km/h in residential areas. Currently the default speed limit on residential and unsigned roads is 50 km/h but the providence has introduced a bill to allow cities more options to decrease pedestrian accidents, which would include the lowering of speeds in residential neighbourhoods.

At Findlay Personal Injury Lawyers, we have offices all over Ontario, including Hamilton, and believe in the safety of all residents in the providence. Pedestrians are more vulnerable and at greater risk for injury when running, biking, or walking along roadways. Until the cities apply better safety measures, pedestrians can take steps to lower their risk of injury from an accident with a motor vehicle. Some of these steps include:

  • Wearing bright coloured clothing
  • Use lights/flashlights at night when biking or walking
  • Stand clear of objects and obstacles before crossing so drivers can see you
  • Always walk on sidewalk
  • Do not walk or bike while impaired
  • Use pedestrian signals, and look both ways, when crossing roads
  • Don’t use headphones or talk on phone while crossing street
  • Understand right of way and basic traffic rules

These are just a few of the many steps you can take to make yourself safer as a pedestrian in Hamilton, and all around Ontario. Whatever you’re preferred form of activity may be, it’s important to do it in a conscientious manner that will keep you and others on the roadways safe.

Even when following proper safety protocols as a pedestrian, you may still be injured through the negligence of another.
